Finder mounts devices that present a normal disk filesystem. Many Garmin watches and newer handhelds instead expose their files through Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). Your Mac can recognize the USB hardware while Finder shows no GARMIN drive.
This is expected MTP behavior, not proof that the cable or watch is broken. Garmin's own Mac support guidance confirms that MTP watches are not recognized as external Finder drives and that only one application can access an MTP device at a time.
Use SmoothDroid as a Garmin MTP browser
SmoothDroid opens compatible Garmin storage beside your Mac files. You can browse folders, see available space, and copy supported files or folders over the USB cable without a cloud upload or a companion app on the watch.

Connect a Garmin to Mac over USB
Use a data-capable cable. Some USB cables and charging cradles provide power without a data connection. Connect directly to the Mac while troubleshooting.
Choose MTP or Media Transfer. If your Garmin has a USB Mode setting, select MTP, Media Transfer, or Mass Storage/MTP. The label and menu location vary by model.
Close competing apps. Quit Garmin Express, BaseCamp, Android transfer utilities, and other software that may already be using the device.
Open SmoothDroid. Wait for the Garmin name and storage to appear, then browse folders such as GARMIN, Music, Podcasts, or Audiobooks when your model exposes them.
Copy the files. Drag or copy files between the Garmin and Mac panes. Leave the cable connected until the transfer finishes.
No USB Mode option? Some Garmin models select their computer mode automatically. Search the owner's manual for “USB Mode,” then use the troubleshooting checks below if the device still does not appear.
What we tested
We directly connected a Garmin vivoactive 4 to the standalone commercial version of SmoothDroid on macOS. SmoothDroid identified the watch, displayed its free space and folders, and completed a create, upload, read-back, byte-match, and delete round trip over MTP.
That is a direct test of the same standard MTP path SmoothDroid uses for compatible Garmin devices. It is not a claim that every Garmin model and firmware version has been individually tested.
Which Garmin devices can SmoothDroid access?
SmoothDroid is designed for Garmin watches, cycling computers, and handhelds that expose file storage over standard MTP. Garmin documents MTP use across many music-capable watches, watches with Garmin Pay, and newer outdoor handhelds.
That can include models in Garmin's vivoactive, Venu, Forerunner, fenix, epix, MARQ, Edge, and handheld ranges, but the protocol and accessible folders depend on the exact model and firmware. A device that only exposes Garmin Mode, a proprietary interface, or charging will not provide browsable MTP storage.

Files you may be able to browse
The folders available are controlled by the Garmin device. Depending on the model, MTP storage may expose:
The GARMIN folder and supported activity, course, route, workout, or settings files.
Music, podcast, and audiobook folders on music-capable watches.
Maps or other files on compatible handheld and cycling devices.
Do not replace or remove system files unless you know what the device expects. For firmware updates, account sync, and Garmin-managed services, continue to use Garmin's official apps.
Garmin not recognized on Mac: connection checks
Disconnect the Garmin, restart it, and reconnect it with a known data cable.
Plug directly into the Mac instead of a monitor, keyboard, dock, or USB hub.
Clean and reseat the watch contacts or charging connector.
Quit Garmin Express, BaseCamp, OpenMTP, MacDroid, Android File Transfer, and other MTP utilities before reopening SmoothDroid.
If available, switch USB Mode away from MTP, switch it back to MTP or Media Transfer, then reconnect.
Open System Information on the Mac, select USB, and refresh. If the Garmin appears there but not in Finder, it may still be an MTP device.
If the Garmin does not appear in System Information at all, focus on the cable, charging contacts, adapter, and USB port first. Garmin also provides an official Mac USB connection checklist.
Garmin USB mode: Garmin Mode versus MTP
Some devices can alternate between a vendor-specific Garmin Mode and a file-transfer mode. Garmin Mode can charge the device without exposing files. MTP or Mass Storage/MTP is the mode needed for direct storage access.
If a setting already says MTP but no app can browse the device, reselecting or resetting that USB mode can force the watch to reconnect with the correct interface. Then unplug and reconnect before opening SmoothDroid.
